The author was assistant superintendent of Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals in Boston and Assistant Professor of Tropical Diseases at Boston University School of Medicine. His book is part travelogue and part memoir of his experiences as a western physicians treating patients in China. Powell's book was probably the first work by a physician to concern the Chinese practice of foot binding.
