First description of general paresis, or paralytic dementia, general paralysis of the insane, or "maladie de Bayle". This is considered the first demonstation of an organic cause for a "psychiatric" disorder; it was influential in drawing the attention of psychiatrists to other disorders of the nervous system as possible causes of other "mental" disorders.
